THE first semi-final matches of Jeopardy! Masters aired on Friday night, and it's safe to say the competition is heating up.

Victoria Groce lost the first game against Yogesh Raut and James Holzhauer after a rare misstep in Final Jeopardy!.

She walked away with zero match points, while Yogesh earned three and James scored one.

During game two, James subbed out for Amy Schneider, who struggled to keep up and ended with negative earnings.

Despite her uphill battle against Victoria and Yogesh, Amy was all smiles when host Ken Jennings checked in with her for a life update.

Ken asked Amy about her book, but she decided to take a moment to brag about beating his streak on the New York Times Spelling Bee instead.

"How you like me now, Jennings?Who’s the greatest of all time now?” she joked.

Jeopardy! Masters returns next Monday at 8 pm EST on ABC. New episodes are available to stream with Fubohere, Hulu here, DirecTV here, and Sling here.

    Victoria Groce's unvictorious first game

In Game 1 - James (name in a cryptic font) faced Yogesh and Victoria, a rematch of Masters' most intense game in the previous round, and Amy sat out.

Going into Final Jeopardy, Victoria had 18,000, Yogesh 24400, and James 13000.

The "Native American Language" clue was, "In 1610 John Smith published a Powhatan Word List including these 2 words familiar to us today, one word in pairs and one wielded."

James was correct with "Moccasins and Tomahawks" and bet 98.

Victoria was incorrect in writing "Moccasins and Hatchets," and she looked distraught and dropped to third place.

Yogesh received 3 points for first, James 1 point for second, and Victoria 0 points in her first-ever last-place finish.

More on the new spin-off series

Pop Culture Jeopardy! was announced on May 15, and will answer clues on "alternative rock to The Avengers, from Broadway to MMA and Gen Z to Zendaya," per Deadline.

Unlike the original series, Pop Culture Jeopardy! will stream on Prime Video instead of cable.

Although some fans disagreed with the spin-off, some expressed excitement with one sharing on social media, "Now I may be able to win this @Jeopardy! Where do I sign up?"

"My time is now," echoed a second.

    New spin-off series announced

A new spin-off Jeopardy! series has been announced which will feature pop culture questions exclusively.

Fans reacted to the news on X, formerly Twitter, with one writing, "I don’t think they should do a pop culture version of Jeopardy. One of the best things about Jeopardy is seeing poindexters who know way too much about quantum physics not know who Michael Jordan is."

"I would die on the hill that Jeopardy is a perfect product which does not ever need to change," another added.

"One of my favorite moments was in that one Tournament of Champions when the writers stumped all 3 contestants by asking which 2 Friends characters were brother and sister," a third chimed in.

Yogeshis a controversial three-day champ who punched his ticket by winning the intense2024 Tournament of Champions.

Victoria, a mere one-day champ from 2005, qualified by winning the recentJeopardy’s Invitational Tournamentagainst Amy and Andrew He, no small feat. She’s also, like James, on The Chase.

Fans appreciated her honest take on the situation and reacted with their support.

“A thoughtful and realistic take on the real world,” one user replied.

“You do rock I had never even thought about your marketability as a reason why you would be a Producer’s Pick, I assumed it was cause you’re one of the best!” wrote another.

Amy Schneider defends Producer’s Pick spot, part five

Amy Schneider concluded, “If I didn’t want to feel like my choice was dictated by marketability, then I should have just won the JIT, and I didn’t (This, by the way, is entirely normal in individual competition.

“However, while I didn’t feel fraudulent, I did feel like I had toprovethat I belonged.

“I knew that my choice would face some justifiable criticism, and the only way for me to answer it was “on the court,” if you will – comparing her selection to pro tennis.

“Which would be tough, but my confidence was riding high after JIT.

“I was ready to go down there and test myself against the best in the world, and I intended to show everyone that 'the best in the world' included Amy Schneider!”

Amy Schneider defends Producer’s Pick spot, part four

Amy went on to name-check some other deserving candidates, “Brad Rutter, Ben Chan, and Troy Meyer immediately spring to mind, and a case could be made for a few others.”

Amy went on to argue that placing second in the JIT to Victoria justified her spot.

“But that said: The JIT was arguably (only arguably!) the toughest tournament played in the last year, and I came in second in it (and while I’m not a neutral observer, I think it was a deserved second).

“So I feel I was perfectly qualified to be in consideration.

“At that point, did marketability concerns give me the edge over other worthy options? Maybe! I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

“But we all knew the paths to auto-qualify.”

Amy Schneider defends Producer’s Pick spot, part three

Amy wrote on X earlier this season, “I wanted to start by sharing my thoughts on being the 'producer’s pick.'

“Look, I’m not naive. I am aware that the producers at Jeopardy see me as marketable, and that they think (rightly or wrongly) that it’s good for business to have me on their show.

“And I’m not ashamed of that in itself; I worked hard to show that a trans personcouldbe marketable, and I’m proud to have had some success at that.

“But that said, I certainly don’t want my marketability to undercut the meritocratic spirit of Jeopardy.

“If I had been the Producer’s Pick without being clearly qualified for it, it would have felt wrong, disrespectful to the game I love.

“Thankfully, however, that situation did not arise. I don’t say that I’m theonlyperson who was clearly qualified to be the Producer’s Pick.”

Amy Schneider was named this season’s Producer’s Pick, part two

Unlike Masters Season 1 in 2023, this year’s lineup is based on the winners of previous events – except for the last spot.

James Holzhauer, Matt Amodio, and Mattea Roach were guaranteed slots by placing top three in Masters Season 1.

Victoria Groce qualified by winning the recentJIT(over Amy) and Yogesh Raut won the2024 Tournament of Champions.

But Amy was put back in as theProducer’s Pick, which caused mixed reactions from fans, as she didn’t“earn her way back.”

Amy placed fifth in Masters Season 1 and also decisivelylost the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament to Groce, only for both to move forward to Masters either way.

The decision to go with Amy over a third new player for Masters 2024did not sit well with all fans.
